RPS Dining Guide
As a part-time graphic designer for Indiana University’s Division of Residential Programs and Services, I was assigned to redesign the food and dining guide sent out to incoming Freshmen.
The project really resonated with me, personally, because I was a new student at IU at the time. The memory of feeling overwhelmed at new locale, difficulty remembering what was where, was still fresh in my mind. I wanted to design something that would help minimize that sensation for the following year’s newcomers as much as possible.
Inside the guide, inbound students and parents could find maps of the specific areas around campus where food courts could be found, and icons indicating exactly where each food court was. Additionally, there were listings of what kinds of food were offered at each food court.
Fortunately, I had some fantastic assets provided for this project that helped it look really great. Shooting food is no easy task, but the photos taken for this project were so high-quality, I was able to display them big.
That’s a really important part of design: make wise use of the assets you’re given. If the assets aren’t that great, use them, but don’t let them dominate your layout. If they are great, use them to their fullest effect.
