Pandora caps free listening for "top 10%" of its listeners

An email appeared in my inbox recently, informing me that Pandora will cap free listening to 40 hours per month. What I found interesting was, the message claimed this would only affect the top 10% of its users. Really?

A song for all the brainiacs in the house

Some songs rock my body. Whenever I hear the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter,” I just want to thrash my head and raise my fist. “Wolf Like Me” by TV On The Radio, rocks my soul, evoking a raw sense of passion otherwise easily forgotten. What I think I really like about “Moan,” by Trentemoller, is that it rocks my brain.

All the emotion from 2008 distilled into one song

My song of the year has to be “Harvard Hands” by the Foxymorons. If you haven’t heard it, you can find a free MP3 on the webpage for the album, Hesitation Eyes. Pretty close to day one, 2008 was a year spent in a pit, looking to the sky for light and dreaming of warmth. It’s the kind of feeling music expresses in ways words simply can’t, and it’s expressed brilliantly by the Foxymorons.

Which song defines the year?

I think I want to start a new annual tradition: near the end of each December, think of one song that encapsulates the emotions for which I’ll most remember the passing year. Not a playlist of songs, mind you – it would be too easy to build a narrative structure that bridges from one song to the next.

More than just mindless drum banging

I love my Dad, but every now and then, I visit his house, accidentally leave one of my CDs in his car, and get a comment about how the drummer does little more than simply bang the drums. How could I explain to him, then, why I really enjoy a song like “1,000,000” by Nine Inch Nails?

How music reviews differ from videogame reviews

One thing I noticed about music reviews is that they seem less fixated on getting a 9.0+ score. Perhaps it’s time to think about why a 7.0 review score may be okay for music but not for a videogame.

Sobriety Does Wonders

Since Trent Reznor has stopped drinking alcohol, he seems to have become more political.

Playing the Angel's Advocate

Depeche Mode is back, and this time, it’s the Mode everyone remembers.

From Japan With Teeth

Am I a Nine Inch Nails nutcase for buying the Japanese import verion of /With Teeth/?
