You Know Leaves are Cliche When...
Jon Hicks recently lamented that leaf-based logo designs, like the one he uses, are everywhere.
The question, for me, is: How many different ways can a graphic designer go these days? We got tired of the technology theme years ago – it got cliche at about the same time as investing in profitless dot-com companies. Graphic designers needed to communicate that the web would grow out of the ashes of past failures, and blossom into a fully fruit-bearing market.
That fruit is Web 2.0. Which, as many people have pointed out works kind of like the Emperor’s New Suit.
So, the question becomes, where are we going next? Back to technology? Or maybe a fusion of the synthetic with the organic? Or maybe optic effects that make people feel dizzy – dizzy from all the progress we’re making! Or maybe everything will look exactly like print media.
Whatever happens, I’ve decided to post a “leaf version” of my logo, as a salute to Jon Hicks. Cheers!
