Distantly Yours: Web Design and Photos in Bloomington, IN, by Dan Hiester

The 2008 redesign has finally landed

That’s right. It’s finally happened. I haven’t redesigned this site in three years, so it was long overdue. But I feel I accomplished most of what I wanted to accomplish.

I solved virtually all of the problems I discussed in my post criticizing the 2005 redesign. Most importantly, I created a design that is a much better representation of the level of talent I have now as a designer.

Reinventing the urge to reinvent

One thing about this project that was a little unusual for me is the fact that I didn’t completely reinvent the wheel. Normally, I feel a compulsion to redefine myself, or reinvent my work. This time, I felt it would be a greater challenge to simply re-imagine the layout I had, and execute it with the craftsmanship I have now.

It’s been a challenging, fun project. For the most part, I’m happy with the work I’ve done. Any project can be done better, but not all projects can actually get done. It’s time to send this project out to the world and move onto the next one.
