Distantly Yours: Web Design and Photos in Bloomington, IN, by Dan Hiester

Maybe I Rock

So apparently I rock harder than I knew. Chris Boone posted in a comment at design god Shaun Inman’s blog that “One column designs seem to be all the rage lately.”

I just can’t get over the fact that, actually, they are all the rage right now, and I already had a one-column layout up and running at least a year and a half ago (I can’t remember exactly when it launched; our original server went out of business and took our blog data with it, so we had to start over from scratch on a new server).

The ideas that paid off

Really, when I designed the Vertical Factory blog, I knew that it would serve no other purpose than to display text. And since we tend to write short, sporadic rants, rather than long, thought-out blog entries, I new a narrow column width would serve the layout well.

What I didn’t know at the time is that I apparently wasn’t the only one out there re-evaluating the relationship between form and function in web design. I wasn’t the only one out there who thought to themselves: “I never look at the sidebar on a blog, so why should I bother having one?”
