Browser Add-ons Don't Matter
There. I said it. Users should choose their favorite browser based on what you get from a default install.
I had a conversation with a friend the other day about how Firefox’s extensions make it the best browser ever, because it allows them to ship a simple product for novice computer users, with room to add more sophistication on to meet the demands of power users.
Each Major Release Breaks Add-ons
But I’ve been through betas of all three major releases, and with each new major release, my favorite extensions are broken.
Some of the best extensions are the geeky side-project of one lone hacker, and once that extension is done, they move on. Then, roughly a year later, the Firefox platform moves on, too, leaving you without your favorite features.
So, I’ve decided to avoid add-ons as much as I can. If a browser wants to win me over, it must do so with what comes in the box.
