Distantly Yours: Web Design and Photos in Bloomington, IN, by Dan Hiester

A song for all the brainiacs in the house

Some songs rock my body. Whenever I hear the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter,” I just want to thrash my head and raise my fist. “Wolf Like Me” by TV On The Radio, rocks my soul, evoking a raw sense of passion otherwise easily forgotten. What I think I really like about “Moan,” by Trentemoller, is that it rocks my brain.

Lusciously sparse soundscape

There’s so much I really enjoy about this track, but I think what I enjoy most is its subtlety. Even though the rhythm is quick and punchy throughout, the addition and subtraction of various layers of sound give the song a luscious, organic feel. This feat is made all the more impressive by the sparse approach taken to the track’s production.

It sounds even better with headphones. The reverb on the string and synthetic instruments also retains a shaper resonance when the speaker is right next to your ear, lending more to its cerebral quality. Then there’s the bassline – understated in terms of decibels, and yet fast consistent, like the constant stream of calculations inside a computer.

In short, it rocks my brain the way other songs rock my body, or rock my soul.
